REPRESENTATIVE GAMES
OTAGO'S EASY VICTORY WAIRARAPA OUTCLASSED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Sunday The Rugby game between Otago and TYairarapa was played at Carisbrook yesterday in ideal weather, the ground being a trifle hard following a prolonged spell of dry weather. It was confidently expected that, Otago would be fully extended, but actually the game proved too one-sided to be interesting, the home team winning by 44 points to 3. On two or three occasions only during the whole of the game was the Otago line threatened, and then the attack was easily repulsed. The Wairarapa forwards averaged more than a stone per man heavier than the local vanguard, but were soundly beaten in every department of the game. Devine stood out as the only forward in the visitors' pack to play up to good representative standard. The visitors' backs were no more impressive than the forwards, only Buick, wing-three Quarter, showing up for good play. The Wairarapa backs played a spoiling game from start to finish. On the other hand, the Otago backs stood deep and the inside men showed thrust which frequently beat the defence, and the speedy wings gained big stretches of ground. Watt, the Otago wing, who was the fastest man on the ground, scored three fine tries. The Otago forwards linked up with the backs in fine passing movements and frequently turned defence into attack that ended in tries. Green. Otago. stood out prominently as the best forward on the ground and scored three trieß. He went off injured in the second spell. An unfortunate incident occurred toward the end of the game, when Faulls. a Wairarnptt forward, was ordered ofl by the referee, Mr. Macaßsey, for kicking an Otago player. The first spell ended with Ihe score 23 to nil in Otago'p, favour. For the winners, tries were Bcored by Watt (3), Green (3), Quaid (2), Martin and Gillies. Martin converted four and Taylor kicked two penalty goals. For the losers, Fuller kicked a fine penalty goal from the touchline just before the final whistle. SEDDON SHIELD [BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] BLENHEIM, Sunday By scoring three tries to a penalty goal, Buller defeated Marlborough for the Seddon Shield by 9 points to 3 under excellent. weather and ground conditions. Buller set a standard and pace which the holders could not sustain. More weight in the pack
enabled Marlborough to hold the challengers in the early stages, but Buller never let up, beating the home side in all departments. Orman, Stewart and Neighbours scored for Buller. Lane kicked a penalty goal for Marlborough. CANTERBURY BEATEN SUCCESS OF WELLINGTON [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON, Sunday Wellington defeated Canterbury, holders of the Ranfurly Shield, by 11 points to 8 at Athletic Park yesterday. A crowd of 7000 watched the game. The ground was heavy afler rain, and a light southerly was blowing across the field. Canterbury was almost across in the first few minutes, when it gained ball from a scrum after a forward rush. McAuliffe sent Canterbury away, but it went no further than the twenty-five, where Wright intercepted. Canterbury staged another thrust, in which Poison and Mortlock were prominent, but Dunshea's kick past the fullback went into touch. Play swung back to Canterbury's twenty-five, and Barry, McNeil and Fraser-Smith headed a rush which ended with Barry catching Eathorne in possession and carrying him acrosß the line. Kilby placed Wellington on attack, but Mortlock saved. Then from a lineout Ongley secured niid pushed his way across. Lamason converted. Wellington. 5Canterbury, 0. Canterbury was penalised shortly afterwards, and Lamason added three more points. Barry and Wells burst through from past half-way, beat the Canterbury fullback, and Barry scored. Lamason's kick missed. Wellington, 11; Canterbury, 0. Good work by the Canterbury forwards took play into the Wellington twenty-five. McPhail hurdled over a tackier to score in the corner. Eathorne converted with a splendid kick. At half-time the score was:—Wellington, 11; Canterbury, 5. Wellington started the second spell brightly with ft passing rush which took play to the Canterbury twenty-five. Lilburne short-punted and the return kick was fielded by Wright, who sent Barry away. The Wellington forward forced his way across with two men holding on to him. but a try was not allowed. Both sets of backs were throwing the ball about freely in the closing stages. Wellington was attacking when play suddenly swung in the other direction, and Canterbury scored its second try as the result of a sparkling back movement. The ball went out to Mortlock, who cut in and passed to Dunshea, who went over in the corner. The kick failed. Wellington was nearly over on two occasions, but the Canterbury defence stood the test, and the final Bcore was' Wellington, 11; Canterbury, 8. BRIGHT DISPLAY WANGANUrS GOOD WIN [BT TELEGRAPH PBESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL, Sunday In a bright and spectacular game Wanganui defeated Southland yesterday by 34 points (seven tries, five converted, and a penalty goal) to 31 (six tries, five converted, and a penalty goal). The weather was fine and the ground firm. About 4 o'clock, however, light rain fell and continued intermittently for the rest of the second half. Southland gained a large share of the ball in the firßt spell, although the pace and opportunism of the Wanganui forwards made them a constant menace. Southland led by 18 points to 8 at half-time. Half-way through the second spell Southland held a comfortable lead, but Wanganui was by no means done. A steady drizzle made handling very difficult, and this, coupled with the fact that Southland had eased off slightly, paved the way for a strong finishing burst by Wanganui. The Southland defence at no time during the game was reliable, and three tries were Bcored in quick succession, giving Wanganui a three-points lead just before time. Bullock-Douglas was well marked all day, but in making sure of him the Southlanders were inclined to neglect the inside men. Features of the game were the number of infringement's on both sides and the accurate kicking, ten of the thirteen tries being converted.
