FIFTY YEARS AGO
HOMEWORK FOR CHILDREN Half a century ago the question of homework for children was engaging tho attention of educationists. " The matter of home lessons cropped up at the City Schools Committee on tho complaint of a member, who sain that three parents had made complaints privately on the question, stated the New Zealand Herald oi August 12, 1885. "If there were undue pressure on the children intellectually in the shape of homework, a® thought it should be remedied. Another member felt that the home I<w* sons did not seem to be overdone, or so many children would not be seen running about the streets at nigMThe chairman said it would not advisable to do anything in the way interfering with the home lessons ■the children, at least without a conwr* ence of the teachers."
