GALES OFF COAST
STEAMER'S SPEED REDUCED COASTAL VESSELS DELAYED■ Rough seas are still being encountered by vessek off tbe coast of New Zealand. The steamer Canadian Highlander, , which arrived from Montreal early yes- ' terday afternoon, had to contend with high winds for the last week of her voyage. The wind frequently reached galo force from the west, and the vessel continually shipped heavy seas. Her normal speed of about 11$ knots was greatly reduced by the gale early in the week, and on Wednesday she was making only four knots. No serious ciamage was done. Unfavourable weather also was experienced by the. motor-ship Triaster,' - which arrived yesterday morning, during the last- two days of her run from Nauru Island. The local office of the Westport Coal Company, Limited, received advice yesterday that the steamer Canopus had put in at Napier on account of the rough seas she was meeting, but she resumed her voyage early yesterday afternoon, and is due here to-morrow morning. The Canopus, which usually makes the trip from Westport to Auckland via the West Coast, had to proceed through Cook Strait, on account of a northerly gale she encountered, but she found conditions equally bad on the East Coast, *and anchored for a time off Portland Island, 'near Kawke's Bay. She was originally due here on Tuesclay. The Manukau Bar proved workable for inward vessels yesterday morning, £md the Hauturu, which had been barbound the previdus day, succeeded in crossing outward early in tho afternoon. Seas became rougher later in the afternoon, however, and the sailings of the Ronaki and Hokianga for Hokianga had to bo postponed until this morning.
