Seats for Waterfront Road A request was received by the City Council last night from a private individual that seats be placed at intervals along the waterfront road. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, it was decided to invite donations of seats for the purpose. Further Rise in Barometer The barometer, which began rising rapidly early on Wednesday morning, continued its upward trend yesterday, the rise for 24 hours ended midnight being .30in. The reading at 4 a.m. on Wednesday was 29.50 in. and at midnight last night, 30.40 in., so that the barometer has risen nearly an inch in the last two days. Death on War Anniversary After a long illness a soldier of the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Corporal John Towers,. 8/850, of Brooklyn, Wellington, died on August 4, the 21st anniversary of the outbreak of the war. He was buried with full militaryhonours. Archdeacon W. Bullock, chaplain of the forces, conducted tho service at Karori Soldiers' Cemetery. Tramwayman's Fire Alarm Dense and acrid smoke issuing from a shop in Victoria Street, near tho corner of Nelson Street, shortly before 11 o'clock last night, caused a tramway motorman to stop his car and rush to tho nearest street alarm box to call the city fire brigade. A small crowd quickly gathered but on the arrival of tho brigade it was found that tho cause of the smoke,was only the burning of rubbish. " Tin Can Island » Malls Thero is little possibility of any vessel calling at Niuafoou Island until September or October, so that letters sent for the "tin can mail" by the Monowai on her recent cruise, will probably not reach their destination for some months. Tho Matson liners Mariposa and Monterey have been calling off Niuafoou recently, but they will in future not do so. Tho mails will thus bo dependent on irregular calls. ~ Injured in Motor-car Injuries to the mouth were suffered by Mr. William 0. Stocklcy, aged 23, of 185 Tamaki Drive, Kohiinarama, last night, when a motor-car in which ho was riding passed over a traffic dome in Gladstone Road, Parnell, and tossed him violently against tho hood. Mr. Stockley's upper lip was badly cut, and threo teeth were loosened, but after treatment at the St. John Ambulance he was ablo to return to his employment. Tidy Taxi Stands At the request of one of the taxicab companies, the City Council decided last night to place a refuse receptacle at each of the 22 taxi stands in tho city. The company stated that the bylaws required the interiors of >cabs to be kept clean, and its desire was to keep the streets as tidy as possible. The city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, reported that tho cost of the receptacles would be £'22, but he considered tho suggestion should be carried out. Ship's Register Disappears The ship's register of the motorvessel Tuhoe was found to be missing following an accident to a member of tho crew yesterday afternoon. The man was taking tho register and ship's articles to the Marine Department office in Customs Street to have an alteration made, when he was knocked over by a motor-car. Although he was not seripusly hurt, it was discovered that while he had retained possession of the articles, the register had disappeared. Motor Driving Tests The practice of having a traffic officer available nt tho Town Hall during office hours to test motor drivers and inspect licensed vehicles is to be abandoned by the City Council. It was decided last night that as such tests and inspections average 10 a day the work should bo carried out in future by appointment, except in cases of urgency. It was stated that this would bo more convenient to the public, and would release the officer for other outside duties. The Mayor and Alsatians There was a burst of laughter in the City Council chamber last night when the minute clerk read a note of a letter from a citizen drawing attention to the Alsatian dog menace and requesting the council to pass a bylaw prohibiting the keening of these dogs within tho city. The Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, who had lately been prosecuted on a charge of keeping dangerous Alsatians, laughed as heartily as any. On his motion the letter was referred to tho legal and by-laws committee. „ Grants by Local Bodies The Auckland branch of tho New Zealand Crippled Children's Society at a meeting held last night received a letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs, Sir Alexander Young, to the effect that boroughs and town boards were empowered under tho Municipal Corporations Act to contribute toward the work of such societies out of their general funds. Previously tho branch had been informed by some local bodies that special legislation would be necessary to enable grants to bo made in this way. It was with a view to having this legislation introduced that the branch made an application to tho Minister. Home For Crippled Children An intimation from Mrs. W. R. Wilson that facilities would be granted to those who desired to view St. Leonards, Takapuna, was received by tho general committee of tho Auckland branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children's Society at a meeting held last night. At her suggestion permission granted for tho placing of a collection box in tho grounds. Mr. G. W. Hutchison said ho had discussed with Mrs. Wilson the question of visitors to St. Leonards, and it had been agreed that it would "bo an oxeellent idea to arrange for an afternoon gathering in the grounds when the weather improved. Wages ol Labourers A request that the Auckland and Suburban Local Bodies' Association should consider tho appointment of delegate?, to a conference to discuss a demand from the Auckland and Suburban Local Bodies' Labourers' Union for a 40-hour week, at a wage of £4 10s for dry and wot weather, was received at last night's meeting of the Local Bodies' Association from tho Auckland City Council. It was decided to reply that in, view of the fact that a number of bodies affiliated to tho association were members of tho Auckland Employers' Association, and would therefore only approach tho matter through this channel, it was the opinion of the meeting that the rej quest was one for the individual con- | sideration of the authorities concerned.
