TAUPIRI DRAINAGE
INCREASE IN RATES MEETING OF THE BOARD [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday Consideration was given at a meeting of the Taupiri Drainage and River Board to-day to the estimates for the current year's rates submitted by the clerk, Mr.' R. P. Hazard. In most cases an increase was provided for. In view of the fact that the board intends to press more heavily for arrears, and hopes of prosperous times were held to be more definite, it was decided to increase the rates, but not to the extent provided for in the estimates. Notice of motion was given to strike the rates at the next meeting of the board. The desirability of consolidating' the board's loans was discussed and Mr. Hazard was instructed to communicate with the Treasury Department, with a view to obtaining advice on the question. Mr. F. A. Swarbrick said that if a consolidated loan could be arranged with only one rate there would be a considerable saving annually in interest and sinking fund charges.
