TRAFFIC SUPERVISION

ACTION BY THE MAYOR CONTROL ,OF CABARETS In a report to the City Council last night, the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, stated ho had obtained a comprehensive report on the general administration of the traffic department, embodying a series of recommendations for improvement. He recommended that the request of the Legal qnd By-laws Committer for directions regarding the vacant position of chief traffic inspector bo referred to the Finance Committee, with instructions to report upon promotions within the department and to consider and comment upon the report already mentioned. This was adopted. A letter was received from the Auckland area of the New Zealand Alliance alleging lack of proper supervision of the cabarets and dance halls under the council's control, and stating that, according to information received, a great amount of indulgence in alcoholic liquor was taking place in these cabarets and halls, with deplorable results, and evidently there was need for much stricter control than was at present exercised. The matter was referred to the Legal and By-laws Committee for a report. Regarding a complaint by 60 residents of street flooding at Kohimnrama, the city engineer reported that most of the trouble had arisen because a natural stormwater drain through private property had not been kept clear. He had served notices on the owners to carry out the work. However, the provision of a more adequate system of stormwater drainage for the developed flat area of Kohimarama would be most desirable, and he had already included an amount in the estimates of works that were now before the council. It was decided to reply in terms of the city engineer's report. At a special meeting held before the ordinary one, the council passed five special orders relating to various matters, including the Upper Queen Street extension scheme, and the reduction of rentals of Civic Square properties.
