NORTHERN FLOODS

Sir, —"Streamlands" strikes the right note when he says that the willows in the Hoteo River are responsible for much unnecessary flooding, but when he suggests that the local authority should deal with the matter he is rather unjust. The Rodney County Council, with very limited resources in such a sparsely populated area, cannot at present cope with the many miles of roads that have been made during the last few years. Its •responsibility is first to the greatest number of its own ratepayers. The disorganisation caused by these floods seriously affects the whole of the province from Wellsford north. Without communications the commercial loss throughout must be enormous, to say nothing of being without mails, newspapers, etc. It is therefore evident that the clearing of the willows is a national matter and should be dealt with upon those lines. With so many unemployed it would seem that no more useful purpose could be served than that the Government should employ many of these unfortunate people on such an essential work. Rodnet.
