BOARD OF CONTROL

AUSTRALIAN CRICKET CONTROVERSY AROUSED PLAYERS BARRED FROM TOUR By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received July 26, 10.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 26 The action of the Australian Cricket Board of Control in barring seven players from going to India with Frank Tarrant's team is strongly in all quarters. The Daily Telegraph says the cricket world will be stunned by the board's decision. The Labour Daily's front-page streamer reads: " Cricket Board Sounds Its Own Death-Knell." Mr. J. S. flutcheon stated that ho and the other Queensland member of the board, Mr. R. Hartigan, would take immediate steps to have the decision reversed. The Daily Telegraph further states that in high cricket circles it is believed that the board's move will have repercussions that will startle the cricket world. Interviewed in Melbourne, W. M. Woodfull, Australia's test match captain, said: " From past experience I am not in the least surprised at anything the board does. I would not have made the trip in any case. Nevertheless, it is shocking that Oxenham, Chilvers, Kippax and Nitschke should be treated so harshly." Mr. Tarrant, also speaking in Melbourne, stated that he would proceed with his plans for the tour unless the Maharaja of Pa'tiala, who is financing it, decided otherwise. Mr. Tarrant added that he had telegraphed to the Board of Control asking it to reconsider the case of Oxenham, who had been repeatedly overlooked for test tours. He said he would have liked to have taken Chilvers and Kippax, but he bowed to the board's decision in regard to these and other players. The seven players barred from making the tour are : —Woodfull, Kippax, Chdvers, Oxenham, Rigg, Ponsford and Nitschke.
