Mr. Menzies was crossing from the business area to the other side of the town by a pathway traversing the railway line at the northern end of the station when the train drew in. While he was on the railway track the whistle from the ' locomotive was sounded, and it is believed that he was undecided what to do. He was bending forward as the engine struck him and was thrown on the platform. The train was not going very fast at the time.
Mr. Menzies, who was a widower, was one. of the oldest residents of the district.
