PERAMBULATOR DERBY
MAN WINS FREE HAIRCUTS
A burlesque on the Beechworth-Mt. Buffalo wheelbarrow contest caused much amusement at Lithgow, New South Wales, recently. A perambulator was substituted for the wheelbarrow, and heavy rain obligingly substituted for tho snow, which gave the Victorian contest stage effect. Joseph Kelly, a theatre employee, wagered Dave McSorley, a hairdresser, that ho could wheel him in a perambulator from tho Royal Hotel, South Bowenfels, to the Royal Theatre, Lithgow, about four miles, in an hour. The stakes agreed upon were: If Kelly won, he should receive freo haircuts and shaves from McSorley for a period of six months; if ho lost, he should treat McSorlo.v to free tickets for the Royal Theatre twice a week for nine months. Kelly won the wager easily. He completed "tho course in 33 minutes, to the accompaniment of loud cheering from a dense crowd. An ordinary domestic perambulntor was used, and its springs wore severely tested, as McSorley weighs 13st. Kelly was clad in plus fours and a nurse's blouse and cap, while McSorley wore a nightdress and a bonnet. In spite of tho heavy rain, the pusher was favoured by tho grade of tho course, which was slightly downhill.
