MISS HARTIGAN'S SUCCESSES « f Miss Joan Hartigan's tennis rise since IS>2B, when she won the New South Wales schoolgirls' championship, has been meteoric. She was then a student at Loretto Convent, Kirribilli, under the tennis coach, Herbert Edwards. Three years later Miss Hartigan won thd girls' New South Wales titles in both singles and doubles, and represented the State in Wilson Cup matches. In I£>32 she performed the almost incredible feat of winning both the New South Wales singlets junior ami senior titles, as well as the Victorian singles title. Starting from this year, she, with Miss L. Bickerton, won th«; New South Wales double# title for three years in succession.

Then came Miss Hartigan's really big year, 1933, when she won the Australian singles title, as well as the New South Wales singles championship, the doubles with Miss L. Bickerton, and the girls' singles and doubles with Miss J. Williams. An attack of influenza prevented Miss Hartigan from competing in the last Australian championship, which was won by Miss Dorothy Round.

Prior to leaving for England this year Miss Hartigan was coached by the professional, Jim Willard, to develop the rest of her game in support of her famous forehand drive.
