GROWING OF TOBACCO
REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW RETURNS TO BE FUIMSHED [by telegbaph—press association*] NELSON, Friday At the request of Mr. K. J. Holyoake, M.P., the acting-Minister of Customs, Sir. Hamilton, has prepared a statement setting forth in clear language the recently-amended Customs Act governing the growing, handling, and holding of tobacco leaf by growers and others. , The main requirement is stated under the tobacco regulations made on January 9, 1917. It is provided that any person other than a person growing or manufacturing tobacco for his own use shall, as soon as any raw tobacco grown by him is harvested, make a return to the nearest collector of customs showing the kind and quantity of such tobacco, the number and description of packages (if any) in which it is packed, and the purpose: for which it is intended to be used.
It is also provided that before any such tobacco is removed from the premises on which it has been grown notice as to the place to which it is to be removed shall be sent to the nearest collector of customs. Further, if raw tobacco is returned to the grower notification must also be made,
