TRANSPORT BY ROAD

NEED FOR CHECKING-TIP ADMISSION BY A WITNESS LICENSING AUTHORITY ACTS [from our own correspondent] WAIUKU. Friday The allegations made before the So. 2 Licensing Authority at Pukekohe yesterday that unauthorised motor transport was being conducted were given particular point when a licence-holder in evidence at the sitting of the Authority at Waiuku to-day, admitted that at times he might have gone beyond the scope permitted by his licence. He was explaining the extent to which motor-lorries were in demand for con- ; veying milk lambs from the Waiuku I disrrict to Westfield during the season, j and said he might be instructed by a | buyer to transport 500 lambs bought jon the farms to the Westfield works j that day. "Would Make Two Trips" In reply to the chairman, Mr. J. A. i C. Allum, witness said he would divide th*> job with another carrier. Mr. r Allum: But your lorry and hi 3 would take only 80 to 100 lambs each. Witness: Yes. We would have to make two trips. Mr. Allum: What, two trips in the day ? Witness: Yes Mr. Allum: But both you and the other operator are licensed to make only one trip to Westfield each week. Witness did not reply. "Unsatisfactory Impression" Later, Mr. Alium said the admission by witness had left a very unsatisfactory impression in the minds of the members of the Authority. It emphasised the need brought to their notice at Pukekohe yesterday for effectively checking up on road transport to ensure that only operators with licences were conducting services and that they were conducting them within the .terms of their licences. The Authority would stress the matter with the Transport Department. Where special trips had to be made, the operator should apply for a temporary licence for the purpose. Most Produce Waybill* The Authority called upon the witness and the other operator to whom he referred to produce ail their waybills for the past year, together with a schedule showing "the number of trips made to Westfield and the date of each. Decision on their applications for renewal of their licences was deferred pending receipt of these particulars. Mr. Allum stated that unless they were produced within a reasonable time, the Authority would consider refusing to renew the licences. Renewal was granted in the case of all the other applications, a total of 19. A new licence was granted <so R. J. | McPike to conduct a goods service with a vehicle of two tons 3cwt. in the Manukau Peninsula from Waiuku northward.
