TENNIS VICTORY

AUSTRALIA BEATS ENGLAND MATCHES AT EASTBOURNE (Received July 21, 7.35 p.m.) LONDON. July 20 In the tennis match between Australia and England at Eastbourne, Quist and Turnbull yesterday beat Hughes and Tuckey, 3 —6, 6 —3, 6—4. Turnbull was the best of the four. He served and smashed with savage accuracy. The Australians generally were superior in volleying and smashing. Tuckey, England's new Davis Cup recruit, is playing much better with experience. He is serving powerfully and his ground strokes have improved. In the last two singles to-day, Crawford beat Austin, 6—2, 6—4, 3 —6, s—3_5 —3_ and in the match between Perry and McGrath the scores were 2 —6, 6 —2, 3 —l when it was abandoned because of rain. Crawford's win gave the Australians the rubber. Full of confidence after his defeat of Perry on Thursday, Crawford drove deeply and powerfully and served well. He volleyed more often than usual and altogether overshadowed Austin's stvlish but less virile game.

Perry and McGrath fought at a great pace. In the first set McGrath hammered backhand drives straight down the line with remarkable accuracy, but Perry, intensifying his boisterous belligerence, won the second set overwhelmingly.

Harry Hopman says the Australians' tour will be a financial success. TLe profits, without taking into account the Eastbourne match, where most of the seats were sold, should approach £2OOO. The New Zealand Davis Cup tie yielded £IOO, the French £2500 and the German £9OO. DAVIS CUP GAMES BUDGE BEATS HENKEL OTHER SINGLES POSTPONED (Received July 21. 5.S p.m.) LONDON. July 20 In the inter-zone final of the Davis Cup contest, at Wimbledon. Budge (United States of America) beat Henkel (Germany), 7—5, 11 —9, 6 —S, 6 1. It was rather a tame encounter, Henkel playing a defensive game throughout. Budge made many errors through impatience, Rain caused the postponement of the match between von Cramm (Germany) and Allison (Lnited States). WIN FOR MALFROY THE FRINTON TOURNAMENT (Received July 21, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. July 20 In the final of the men's singles at the Frinton tournament, C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand), beat Nishimura (Japan), 6—2, B—6.
