FIERCE STORM
VICTORIA SWEPT EXTENSIVE DAMAGE SHIPPING HAMPERED GALE LASHES MELBOURNE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received MELBOURNE. July 19 The whole of the southern portion of the State of Victoria is being swept by a gale with a velocity of 45 miles an hour, which is considerably hampering shipping and doing extensive damage to property, and to electric light and telegraph lines. Attempts to berth the Monterey to-day were futile and the liner finally was compelled to anchor off Port Melbourne.
Smaller ships could not enter the Yarra lijver. Reports from the'country record heavy falls of snow and a regular blizzard prevails in the Australian Alps. A fierce gale is lashing Melbourne. The inter-State liner Westralia from Perth was forced to anchor in the bay and send her passengers ashore in tugs. Considerable damage was done on the foreshore. Piers were damaged and small craft blown ashore. Fences were levelled in the suburbs.
