I THIRD AUCKLAND FESTIVAL FOUR PLAY COMPETITIONS The third Festival of Community Drama arranged by the Auckland branch of the British Drama League is to be held from September 14 to 20, and preliminary arrangements arc now beinp made by the organiser, Mr. J. D. Swan. The festivals, which take the form of dramatic competitions, are intended to raise the standard of production among amateur societies by affording them the opportunity of receiving criticism from an impartial judge and of testing their work before a wider and more critical public, to promote a high standard of appreciation among audiences, and to encourage the progressive element in the amateur theatre. This year Mr. Kenneth Brampton, well known in Auckland as the producer for many years of the Little Theatre Society, has oeen appointed adjudicator. The classes will be as follows: —Oneact play, open, for New Zealand Herald Challenge Cup; one-act play by a New Zealand author, the play to be unpublished at date of entry, and not to have previously won a prize at a British Drama League festival, for " Mirror " trophy; one-act play by juvenile team, for Auckland University College Students' Association Cup; excerpt from classical play for challenge cup. Entries for the second and fourth classes are automatically entered also for the first class, the winning team of which is eligible to compete at the elimination festival at Stratford on October 1 and at the National Final at Hastings on October 3. Entries for the festival, which is open to all affiliated societies of the Auckland area of the British Drama League, dose oil August 1.
