ONE-CHILD FAMILIES
" Tho worst feature of our declining birth rate is tho increased number of one-child families." This was tho opinion expressed by Dr. Harvey Sutton, of Sydney, in a paper 011 "Mental Hygiene," published in tho current issue of The Medical Journal of Australia. The solitary child, whose only companions arc grown-ups, in every way deserves our pity and our help, says Dr. Sutton. Tho main business of tho child was getting its own machinery working and, secondly, building bridges to other worlds —mainly children of its own age. Parenthood was tho one function for which people received no training. Even the teaching of motliercraft was chiefly concerned with baby care and management. One learnt, of course, by experimenting with one's first born. Hence to bo born late in life in tho family seemed a positive advantage, as the parents had probably learnt their job by then.
