FISH RESEARCH

" Vermin fish," a term which includes eels, dace, loach, gudgeon. " miller's thumbs " and minnows, are not greatly appreciated by English anglers. The trouble is that these inferior fishes raid tho spawning grounds of their betters and so create a scarcity. Mr. John Berry, research officer of the Avon Biological Survey, has been making some novel experiments with coloured lights to determine whether certain colours are antipathetic to tho raiders, and so would act as a barrage. Ho made some highly interesting discoveries. Indigo-blue is a deterrent to eels, but has no effect on the others; " miller's thumbs," loach and gudgeon found green annoying, but a greenish blue made " miller's thumbs ' think they saw the bogeyman. Unfortunately, tbey soon learn to associate a coloured light with food, and then they are both ready and willing to face the most hated hue!
