BENDS AT CROSSINGS
" DETERRENT TO SPEEDING" ALLEGED OFFICIAL VIEW [llY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] TE AROHA, Friday An interesting sidelight on the departmental view of level-crossing dangers was given at the monthly meeting of the Te Aroha Chamber of Commerce. The crossing under discussion was the Tirohia level crossing on the main Tb Aroha-Paeroa highway, known locally as Cadman's Crossing. This spot hiis been the scene of many serious accidents, including some fatalities. Most, if not all, of these accidents have been duo to the fact that the actual approach to the crossing is a most abrupt right-angle bend in the highway, A motion recommending the realignment of the road .to eliminate accidents was before the chamber, when Mr. J. J. Shallue, a memb.er of the Ohinemuri County Council, questioned the use of it. "My own council," said Mr. Shallue, "has previously discussed this matter with the railway authorities and they insist upon the sharp bend being retained. They argue that its elimination would encourage motorists to speed over the crossing and increase tho chances of collisions with trains." It was eventually decided to recommend the provision of a subway.
