LITTLE GIRL'S DEATH
LORRY DRIVER CHARGED ACCIDENT NEAR CAMBRIDGE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CAMBRIDGE, Friday As the result of a fatal accident on the To Awamutu-Cambridge road at Monavale on May 8, when Noeline Sybil Hannah, aged eight, was killed, Roy Henry Dickens Bell appeared in the Cambridge Police Court to-day, before justices, on a charge of negligently driving a motor vehicle. He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution was conducted by Senior-Sergeant G. Lambert, of Ham- ' ilton, and iioll was represented by Mr. Kingsford. Keith N. Hannah, father of the girl, who is manager of the Monavale dairy factory, said that he saw the school bus pull up almost opposite his house, and saw his child appear at the back of the bus. He did not pay further attention to her, but next heard a screeching of brakes, and ran toward the lorry. The little girl appeared to be dead, and he carried her into the house. Witness said that he had always told his child to be careful when crossing the road, and had pointed out the danger of coming from behind the school bus. Norman Hague, driver of the school bus, said that when the lorry driven by Bell passed, the latter was on the correct side of the road and travelling at a speed between 20 and 25 miles per hour. Evidence as to the speed of the lorry when it passed the school bus was also given by three school children. Evidence concerning the position of the lorry after the accident was given by Constable V. C. Naylor, and Constable R. Bowie, of Cambridge. The latter said that the brakes of the lorry had been on for a distance of 38ft. The brakes had been tested, and were working .satisfactorily
Bell was committed for trial at tho Supreme Court at Hamilton on August 20.
