TENNIS SURPRISE
PERRY'S POOR FORM BEATEN BY CRAWFORD AUSTIN DEFEATS McGRATH By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, July 18 In a three days tennis match at Eastbourne between England and Australia, on Davis Cup lines, the opening singles resulted : Crawford defeated Perry, 6—o, 6 —4, B—lo, 6—2; Austin defeated McGrath, 7—5, 3—6, 7—5, 6—2. Crawford's form was sound eno-ugh, but Perry's was so unbelievably bad that the Australian merely had to allow the 1934 and 1935 British champion to continue the process of " beating himself."
Crawford won the first set in eight minutes and led 3—o in the second, before Perry played a-stroke worthy of a Wimbledon champion. Ferry then made a strong effort to reciover command, but it was too late to save the set. By a great uphill fight Perry took the third set. After that he was in no condition to stand up against Crawford, who took the fourth set for the match. It was an astonishingly easy Win for the Australian. Austin and McGrath provided a close struggle. McGrath's serving and volleying were superior, but Austin's greater consistency and flowing ground-strokes gave him the victory. '
