ENSURING CALM
FRENCH GOVERNMENT PUBLIC MEETINGS BANNED (Received July 18, G. 35 p.m.) PARIS. July 17 In order to " ensure the nation's economic recovery in the greatest calm " the French Government has forbidden all public meetings and demonstrations as from to-day.

STRONG PROTESTS MADE DEMONSTRATION THREAT PARIS. July 17 The French Cabinet's new economies include a reduction of 10 per (Sent in the interest on the Government's rentes, in which a vast number of Frenchmen have invested their savings. Exception is made in the case of holders over 65 years of age. Already strong protests are being made against the reductions of pensions and salaries. Ex-servicemen are organising, a monster demonstration. The Left Wing newspapers fiercely attack the Prime Minister, M. Laval, for his " iniquitous and stupid cuts."
Other commentators on the detfrees describe them as bold and skilful, and say they will be favourably accepted throughout France, except by the Communists and Socialists.
