FIFTY YEARS AGO
STRENGTH OF ROYAL NAVY In. view of ,J;he recent increase ill armaments, .the following article concerning a general strengthening of thij Navy and the defence of the principal Colonial ports which appeared in thj» New Zealand Herald of July 20, 1883, will be of interest:^"The condition of the Navy, whicjli excited so much attention a short tira# ago in consequence of the revelation* made- in regard to the alleged kr efficiency of the fleet, is engaging tnß consideration, of the present British Government," stated the article. " 111 reply to a deputation which waited aa him, Lord Hamilton, the First Lord d the Admiralty, announced that steili were about to be taken to place it on a more satisfactory footing. " He also announced that it was tla intention of the Imperial Government to render the colonies assistance in placing the principal colonial ports in an effective condition of defence. Trie nature of this assistance is indicated in another telegram which states thus the Government will supply the colonii* with guns to mount at various points of importance. This is said to be vj way of acknowledgment of the loyalty lately evinced throughout the Austria lasian dominions of the Empire."
