ILLEGAL FISHING
MAN WITHOUT LICENCE [BV TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT J ROTORUA, Thursday . " This is a type of case difficult to detect," said Mr. A. Kean, conservator of fisheries, in the Magistrate's Court this morning, when C. H. M. Hawke, a visitor from Wellington, was charged with fishing without a licence from a boat on Lake Rotoiti on April 22. " We had reason to believe that the practice of parties of men embarking in the one boat with, perhaps, two or more rods, but only one licence, was becoming prevalent," said Mr. Kean. "We decided on Easter Monday to make a raid. Approaching the boat which defendant was in we discovered two rods in use. but tho three men on board were able to produce only one licence," Mr. Roe, for defendant, said that two rods were certainly in the boat, one intended for trolling and one for fly fishing. It was when a change from one method to the other was being made that Hawke momentarily had hold of the rod. It was an accidental occurrence. said Mr. Roe, and could not be regarded as a deliberate offence. Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., imposed a fine of £2 and costs.
