EMPLOYERS' ASSOCIATION

CITY COUNCIL RESIGNS LABOUR PARTY VIEWPOINT On the recommendation of its finance committee, the .City Council resolved last night' to discontinue its subscription to the Auckland Provincial Employers' Association after the expiry of the present period on June 30. A letter was received from the Auckland Trades and Labour Council, protesting against the continuance of the City Council's membership in the association and expressing the opinion that public money should not be used for such a purpose. Mr. H. P. Burton opposed the committee's recommendation. He said that if labour disputes were to be settled by some tribunal the council might find that it needed the services of the Employers' Association to represent it. The proposal created a class distinction which was most undesirable. Mr. E. J. Phelan: You're on dangerous ground. Mr. A. Rosser said that the council had been paying the association £2l a vear. the assessment being based on the number of its employees'. So far as the council was concerned, the Employers Association was an obsolete body. "It is not the £2l that I am concerned about, but a question of principle." said Mr. B. Martin. Mr. J. L. C-oakley said that the whole matter was paltry. The Labour Party had a mandate from a section of the people only. Surely the employers whom the council represented deserved some consideration. The committee's recommendation was adopted.
