TAMAKI TRAGEDY

DEATH OF FATHER FATAL BULLET WOUND SHOT FIRED BY SON Having been in a grave condition for over three days as a result of a gunshot wound in the head, Mr. Peter Hobson, aged 40, an East Tamaki farmer, died at the Auckland Hospital at 3.15 yesterday morning. He was shot at East Tamaki early on Sunday afternoon by his son, Peter Hobson, aged 18, who afterward took his own life. At about 11.30 on Sunday morning, after the son had been seen at his father's house with a rifle, the father set off in a motor-van to search for the youth down the road. When the truck was about 90 yards from the farmhouse a shot rang out. Mr. Hobson left the van and scanned the paddock from which the shot came. About 60 yards away the son was seen kneeling on the turf and aiming a rifle. Simultaneously another shot rang out and Mr. Hobson feli with a wound in the head. The youth's body was found later at a point about 20 yards from the position where he was seen kneeling and discharging the rifle. In evidence at the inquest into the youth's death his mother said she recently tried to get a divorce from her husband. The son wanted to give evidence for her, and it worried hirn that he was not permitted to do so. The fact that she lost the divorce case preyed on the son's mind.
