RUGBY FOOTBALL

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH WELLINGTON DEFEATED TARANAKI FORWARDS SUPREME [BY TELEGRAPH —ASSOCIATION] HAWERA, Wednesday Before a crowd of 5000, Taranaki defeated Wellington in the annual Rugby fixture this afternoon by 11 points to 9. The match provided a spectacular exhibition, being played at a fast pace from beginning to end. The teams were: Wellington.—Pollock, Ball, Baldwin, Hansen, Fleming, Lilburne, Kilby. McNeile, Barry, Reid, Butler. Peck, Ongley, Donnelly, Leahy. Taranaki.—Collins, Ford. Sullivan, Edwards, Galbraith, C. Brown, Gudgeon, O. Brown, Gardiner, Clarke, Young, O'Dowd. Armstrong, Fowler, Gargan. The Taranaki forwards played magnificently, bustling the visiting pack and breaking tii] the Wellington rearguard attacks before they developed. The home backs did not possess the same methodical combination as the visitors, although their tries came as the result of concerted movements. Wellington scored early in the game. Lilburne making an openina for Ball to cross at the corner. Lilburne failed to convert. The Taranaki forwards, with Clarke and Brown prominent, led the team down the field, but Lilburne, McNeile and Leahy gained possession and saved a dangerous situation. Play waß transferred to the Taranaki twenty-five, where the home side defended hard for ft considerable period, with only occasional breaks to midfield. Gradually Taranaki brought pressure to bear and the ball passed through all the backs' hands to Ford, who scored at the corner. Collins converted with a magnificent kick from the sideline. Taranaki added three more points before the spell ended, Galbraith making a brilliant run. Side-stepping Lilburne, he passed to Ford, who again scored. Collins failed. The second spell opened with a Taranaki attack which was not stopped until the visiting forwards and backs combined to break through. Fleming ar.d Lilburne were responsible for the next score, the latter touching down. Pollock failed to convert. Taranaki increased their lead as the result of a scramble in front of the Wellington goe.l, where C. Brown snapped up ar.d touched down near the posts, Collins missing an easy kick. For the remainoer of the match Tarannki were definitely on top, except for the final few minutes, when the Wellington backs and forwards swept in a line toward the Taranaki goal, where Baldwin scored as time sounded. Lilburne had a great chance to make the result a draw, but the kick was taken too easily and went wide of the posts. Mr. A. Spratt was referee.
