COUNTRY WEEK TOURNEY BETTER GROUND CONDITIONS SEVERAL CLOSE GAMES Improved ground conditions made for a higher standard of play at the second day of tho Auckland Hockey Association's country week tournament held at Remuera. yesterday. Tho strong wind in tho morning dried the fields and in tho afternoon tho conditions, although far from perfect, were much better than oil Monday. The areas in tho vicinity of the goal-mouths, where play was concentrated, were very rough and stick-work in tho circle suffered as a result. Several matches resulted in hard fought games, that between tho Cambridge and Whangarei A teams revealing some very sound players franklin, in goal for Whangarei. again distinguished himself, the two shots which passed him giving him little opportunity to savo. Tho Cambridge backs were also very Bound and constantly repulsed the opposing forwards. Waipa, in its game with Cambridge in the morning, revealed some good team-work, the stickwork of tho forwards being particularly fino. Both Whangarei A and Rodney A had little difficulty in gaining decisive victories over Franklin. Several close ladies' matches were seen, tho games between Whangarei A aild Hauraki Plains and Auckland B and King Country being keenly contested from start to finish. Tho third round of the ladies' competition will be played this morning and tho fourth this afternoon. The fourth series of men's matches also will be decided this afternoon Following aro the results of yesterday's play : WHITE HORSE CUP A Section.—Second round: Whangarei A, 6 (F. Bint 5, R.
