MAIN HIGHWAYS CONTROL
ROTORUA AND TAUPO AREAS APPOINTMEMT OF INSPECTOR [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORXJA, Thursday The appointment by the Main Highways Board of Mr. D. M. Ford as traffic inspector for the Rotorua and Taupo counties was confirmed to-day. Mr. Ford's duties will involve traffic control over 310 miles of soft or pumice roads carrying at all seasons of the year a heavy volume of fast-mov-ing motor trafiic. The boundaries of the large combined district at their widest extent are 145 miles apart, ranging from Lake Rotoma on the Rotorua-Whakr.tane road to the Mohaka River, 60 miles south-east of Taupo, on the Napier road. In all directions the roads show evidence of wear and tear due principally, it is contended, to high-powered motor-cars * travelling at excessive speeds. The problem created by this type of vehicle is a serious one where roads with a soft surface are concerned. Mr. Ford's territory includes only seven miles of tar-sealed roads. The newly-appointed inspector will begin duty on July 1 with headquarters at Rotorua. i
