TAXATION RESISTED

FOREIGN FILM STARS ENGAGEMENTS IN ENGLAND LOXDOX, June 18 Thirty-eight front-rank foreign film personalities recently landed in England, of whom 30 have come to work by which they will earn at least £'130,000 this summer. The incomes range from George Arliss' £22,000 per film downward, and income tax is being demanded at 4s 6d in the pound on earnings in England, plus surtax. The film stars strongly object to this, pointing out that already they pay 8 per cent of their earnings to California. Some of the stars are trying to overcome the difficulty by announcing that they are not receiving salaries in England, but only travelling and hotel expenses for the tour, and that their real salary is being paid into a foreign bank by their foreign employer. The income tax authorities are likely to bring a test case to counter this evasion.
