VANCOUVER RIOTS CLASHES WITH POLICE STRIKING LONGSHOREMEN NUMEROUS CASUALTIES By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright VANCOUVER, June 18 Striking longshoremen and sympathisers, including women, engaged in a battle with the police for three hours this afternoon, over an area of ]0 city blocks. The trouble followed an attempt by the longshoremen to march on to the Ballantvne pier, where members of another union were working deep-sea vessels.
Eight policemen and at least nine civilians were admitted to hospitals. Scores of people were slightly injured. The police used tear-gas and clubs, the strikers replying with rocks and other missiles. Thirteen arrests were made. After the dispersal of the march against the pier, street fighting at various places over a large area developed. Blood flowed freely from cut heads as the bitter struggle raged in the streets, alleys and yards. Isolated policemen were badly beaten and strikers suffered the same fate from officers.
