NEW BANK BUILDING
VAULTS BELOW GROUND The new building for the Commercial Bank of Australia, Limited, to ho erected on Lambton Quay, Wellington, is to have strong vaults built, well below the level of the ground. Banks in the past were content to build their strongrooms on the ground level, trusting to the massive strength of their construction to resist any eflort that might bo made to break into them. The foundations of the new eightstorey building are to £'.o down 17ft. below the level of the ground, and the lloor of the cellar or basement will Ik* 10ft. below the ground. As the rook to bo excavated is fairly hard, some timo will be occupied in the.removal of ovor I>ooo cubic feet of spoil, A start will, be made on this work as soon as t&fc old strongroom has been disposed
