TIME OFF FOR SPORTS
POSITION OF TEACHERS COUNTRY WEEK HOCKEY BOARD REFUSES PERMISSION The question of granting teachers time oft for sports was again before tho Auckland Education Board yesterday, when four requests were received for leave to allow teachers in the province to attend the country week hockey tournament, to be held in Auckland at the end of this month. The chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, said there was no question of allowing any teacher leave to take part in an international match; all members would agree to that. It had been decided some time ago that the chairman and the secretary, Mr. T). W. Dunlop, should consider other cases on their merits. They were finding the task very difficult. If teachers were allowed a week off, it meant the work of the school must suffer to some extent. "I suppose I am old-fashioned," he said, "but in my younger days we would not havo thought of asking for a week off for any game." Mr. C. F. Collins said the country week tournament played a big part in the lives of some of the country districts.
"Is sport taking too big a part, j though?" asked the chairman. Members stated that they still had | confidence in the committee that had ! been set up to consider applications. It was pointed out that the more applications that were granted, the more would be received.
The chairman said he felt that school work, or any work, should come first. It was decided to grant- an application where the school committee had agreed to a week of the school holidays being altered to coincide with the tournament, but to refuse permission where leave was required. *
