FIFTY YEARS AGO

CEMETERY PROPOSAL ONE TREE HILL OPPOSITION An attempt by the Onphunga Borough Council to establish a publio % cemetery on the present site of Cornwall Park caused considerable indignation in One Tree Hill 50 years ago. Following is an item which appeared in the New Zealand Herald of June 20, 1885, in connection with the matter: — " The people of One Tree Hill and neighbouring districts have taken alarm at the action initiated by the Onehunga people to establish a largo public cemetery on the One Tree Hill reserve. Seeing that this could not fa<l to be in a few years an intolerable nuisance in a district soon likely to be very thickly poulated, the people of the district have resolved to put a stop to the proposal. "A requisition on the subject has been presented to Mr. Hall, chairman of the One Tree Hill l?oad District, who has called a public meeting of the ratepayers and residents to be held in the Epsom Public Hall on Thursday evening. No doubt a strong expression of opinion will be made on the subject and steps probably taken to have the reserve made a recreation ground for the district and placed under the Public Domains Act." [No further reports appeared il. connection with the outcome of tic meeting. 1
