TAKAPUNA RELIEF WORKS
SUGGESTION BY BOARD PLACING MEN ON SUSTENANCE A suggestion that in view of the lack of fields for productive and suitable relief work in Takapuna, the Takapuna Borough Council should transfer some of the 200 relief workers under its control to sustenance, at the rate of 20 a week, was made by the Auckland office of the Unemployment Board in a letter received at last night's meeting of the borough council. The Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, said he thought the board's aim was to drive the men to relief camps. The workers should realise that the Auckland officers of the board were working under instructions from Wellington. These officers were efficient and conscientious and were out to help relief workers. Mr. C. L. Clifton said it would bo a good idea to put all unemployed workers on sustenance. The unemployed would then be absorbed gradually
Mr. F. G. Gibson expressed the opinion that the workers were exploited under the No. 5 Scheme. When the scheme was introduced the council had dismissed all the outside staff except the roller driver.
On the motion of Mr. W. M. White it was decided to call a meeting of the men this morning to ascertain their views and then endeavour to arrange a conference with the Auckland unemployment officers early next week.
