MARKETING HONEY

SALES IN ENGLAND RETURN OF 4fd PER LB. SURPLUS STOCKS REDUCED 4 BOARD'S POLICY APPROVED [from ottr own correspondent] HAMILTON. Wednesday An announcement made by Mr. J. R. Butland, chairman of the Honey Control Board, that the current season's honey sold on the English market through the board would realise 4Jd per lb. was received with applause by delegates to the annual conference of the National Beekeepers' Association of New Zealand, which opened in Hamilton to-day. Fifty delegates attended. Mr. Butland said the Honey Control Board had had excellent success with its marketing arrangements. During its first season, which ended in August, 1934, the board exported and sold 300 tons, which had realised 4 5-8 d per lb. for the suppliers. During the current season the board had advanced suppliers 4d per lb., and would pay them a further 3d per lb, at the end of this month. The board had sold 1250 tons of honey and had reduced the surplus to 50 tons, leaving the market practically clear for next season's operations. The grading regulations that had been adopted in New Zealand, stated Mr. Butland, were designed to produce a honey which suited the taste of the British consumer. The market returns in England coincided remarkably with the grading marks applied in New Zealand. If the producers would supply honey of uniform quality, which could be readily marketed, the returns would be better. Mr. Butland appealed to producers to co-operate with the board. He paid a tribute to Mr. P. A. Hilliary for the work he had. done in framing the grading regulations, and expressed confidence in the future of the industry as far as the export trade was concerned. The association passed a resolution expressing its confidence in the board and its thanks for its efforts to place the industry on a sound commercial basis. A resolution was also passed expressing appreciation of Mr. Butland's assistance to the association in its efforts to secure the passing of legislation which would stabilise the local marketing of honey.
