SCHOOL HARDSHIPS
CASES IN THE COUNTRY FLOODED CREEKS AND SNOW An example of the difficulties encountered by country schoolchildren came before the Auckland Education Board yesterday, when the teacher of the Maramarua school, near Pokeno, asked permission to reduce the luncheon recess to half an hour. This had been suggested by several parents, to allow school to be dismissed early, so that children who had to cross flooded creeks could get home before dark. Only by this means could a satisfactory attendance be obtained in winter. suggestion was approved, subject to the confirmation of the school committee. Another case was mentioned by Mr. W. I. Bowyer. At the Arohena school, near Te Awamutu, nearly half the children were taught in an unheated shelter shed, open at one side, and with a concrete floor The school was at ji height of almost 2000 ft., and there had been snow on three days last week. The school is on the urgent list tor additional accommodation.
