SUSTENANCE RATES

PROPOSED INCREASE MATTER BEFORE BOARD [by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Inquiries in official quarters reveal that the Unemployment Board has before it a proposal to increase sustenance rates during the winter months, but bo far no decision has been made.

ISSUE OF BLANKETS PLIGHT OF SINGLE MEN ' STATEMENT BY MINISTER Complaint that discrimination was being shown between married men and single men in the distribution of blankets was ma'e in a letter which Mr. A. M. .Samuel, M.P. for Thames, sent recently to the Minister of Employment, the Hon. S. G. Smith. Mr. Samuel pointed out that the single men were iust- as susceptible to cold as married men, arid that their meagre earnings would not enable them to purchase blankets. In a reply which Mr. Samuel has now received the Minister stated that the present distribution of blankets is intended as an additional measure of relief to married men only. Ho mentions that the Unemployment Board has previously made blankets available for issue to single workers in unemployment relief camps and that this scheme is still in operation. He regrets that the board is unable to extend the issue of blankets to all single men.
