MOTOR-CYCLE RACE
JUNIOR TOURIST TROPHY FATALITY MARS EVENT J. GUTHRIE, FINISHES FIRST LONDON. June 17 At the Isle of Man to-day, the Junior Tourist Trophy race for motorcyclists resulted: —J. Guthrie, 79.14 miles an hour, 1; Rusk, 78.77, 2; White, 79.10, 3. All rode Nortons. J. Mac Donald, who was making his first appearance as a professional, was killed when he crashed into a bridge during a fierce struggle in the fourth lap. Hi:3 young wife was watching the race when the news was conveyed to her. The course measured 264 miles. Guthrie's time was 3 hours 20 minutes 16 seconds.
The success of J. Guthrie in the Junior Tourist Trophy race at the ]sle of Man was not unexpected, as last year he won both the junior and the senior contests. His average speed of 79.14 miles an hour was a good effort, his figure for the same event last year being 79 miles an hour. A. course record was established in 1933 by the famous Stanley Woods, who attained an average speed of 81 miles an hour in the senior race and he also won the junior at 78 miles an hour.
The British Tourist Trophy races are among the most spectacular contests of their kind. The road circuit of 372 miles, which lias to be lapped seven times, is in manv parts mountainous, and there is need for frequent cornering at high speed. It would be difficult to find a more trying course, for there are numerous hairpin bends as well as the long seven-mile climb of Snaefell Mountain and the equally perilous descent on the other side.
The cablegram does not indicate at which bridge J. Mac Donald was killed, but there are several to be negotiated on the course. A fatality occurred in the light-weight event last year, the 1929 winner, Grabtree, being killed.
It was unfortunate that the New Zealand representative, A. Bradley, of Nelson, who suffered a fracture of the skull during practice, was not able to compete. He won the last Dominion T.T. at Waiheke Island.
The light-weight event will take place to-day. and the senior race will be held on Friday.
