"ORDERED OFF"
REQUEST MADE TO SELECTOR There was an amusing incident in connection with the North Island Possibles and Probables Rugby trial match played at Palmerston North on Tuesday of last week. There is a large area in front of the grandstand upon which spectators were standing. In their eagerness to get the best view of the play, a few encroached near the sideline. A self-appointed official, who had obviously been taking something to keep the cold out, rushed forward and ordered the stragglers back. All but one obeyed his orders, and so he walked somewhat unsteadily up to the " offender " and requested that he get back with the rest. The " offender " was none other than Mr. V. It. Meredith, a New Zealand selector who, with his fellow committeemen, desired to have a close-up view of the play. What Mr. Meredith said to the man in question was not audible, but he grinned broadly as the one making the request beat a rather hasty retreat. Those in the vicinity laughed heartily a few minutes later, when the " official " himself was removed from the sideline by a policeman.
