CHAIN LETTER CRAZE

CANADA AND AMERICA [from our own correspondent] VANCOUVER, May 22 The chain letter craze allegedly designed to bring back prosperity is at the moment, sweeping the United States and Canada. The regular mails, across the border, are delayed as countless millions of letters are being passed on with feverish haste in the rush to participat-e in the new scheme. Briefly, an expenditure of a shilling, sent to one of a chain of five addresses, is "guaranteed" by promoters to return £SOO very soon. Actually, the hoax is roundly condemned, but the fever continues. Gangsters and racketeers in the United States are making a big haul at the expense of the gullible. The United States is rounding up promotors and printers. In Canada, the letters, when they can be recognised, are sent to the Dead Letter Office, and the money enclosed paid into the Treasury.
