INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES
COUNTRY SAWMILLS SETTLEMENT NOT REACHED Although complete agreement was reached in three industrial disputes in the timber industry regarding country sawmills and timber yards in the North Island at conciliation council proceedings at Taumarunui recently, the applications have since been withdrawn. _The Auckland Timber Workers' Union initiated proceedings for an award covering the Northern district, but the employers considered that conditions should be uniform throughout the North Island, and filed applications covering the country districts in the Northern, laranaki and Wellington areas. All three applications were dealt with simultaneously. Agreement was reached by the assessors as to terms and conditions of employment, except the date on which the award was to come into force, which point was referred to the Court of Arbitration. When the recommendations were framed and submitted to the assessors, however, the employees' assessors for the Northern district were unable to sign. As a result, all three applications have been withdrawn in accordance with a prior agreement amopg the employers, as all three districts compete in the same markets.
