PURCHASE OF TRUCK
DEADLOCK AT PAPATOETOE THREE MOTIONS DEFEATED The inability of the members of the Papatoetoe Town Board to agreo on a type of new motor-truck to be purchased caused a deadlock at the board meeting last night. Three motions to purchase three different types of truck were defeated in succession, and the meeting was left without a motion before it.
At the board's last meeting the Works Committee reported it had been unable to agree, and one Britishmade truck and two American vehicles had been named as suitable. Messrs. W. Heald and W. A. Cairns moved that the British truck should be purchased. They were satisfied it would do the work, and it was a local body's duty to "buy British." Mr. L. J. Kendall suggested that the expert's opinion submitted to the meeting should be accepted and acted upon. It recommended a certain American truck. Mr. Pennell supported this. Mr. E. H. Nolan: I have consistently supported the remaining truck, and don't see why I should depart from my view now. (Laughter.) Mr. A. A. Civil supported Mr. Nolan. After discussion the respective motions were each defeated in turn, only the movers and seconders voting in each instance. "The position is somewhat Gilbertian," said the chairman, Mr. W. J. Nicholson. On the suggestion of Mr. Cairns the matter was referred back to the Works Committee to arrange and report on tests of tho respective vehicles' capacity.
