At the general election in 1925 Mr. Lyons stood against the late Mr. J. McCombs, M.P. for Lyttelton, and was declared elected on the casting vote of the returning officer, and later he was given a majority of eight votes on a magisterial recount. Four months after the election he was unseated by a decision of an Electoral Court owing to the registrar enrolling electors beyond the boundary. Mr. McCombs was then declared elected by a majority of 11 votes.

Mr. Thorn is well known in the Labour movement, being at one time president of the party and later national secretary He has previously unsuccessfully contested Parliamentary seats on four occasions..
