STOWAWAYS IN COURT
NO ACTION BY CUSTOMS CONVICTED AND DISCHARGED Remanded for two weeks after pleading guilty to stowing away on the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Ruahine, Walter McCann, aged 37, and Edwin Hart, aged 31, appeared in the Police Court on Saturday morning before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M. The. accused were found on board when the vessel was a day out from Wellington, and were put ashore at Panama, being brought back to Auckland on the Federal Line steamer Cambridge. Sub-Inspector Fox said no action would be taken in the matter by the Customs Department. It had been ascertained that both men, who said they came from Vancouver, had resided in Wellington before stowing away on the Ruahine. They had indicated their intention of stowing away again. The Magistrate: Yes, and land back in prison again. Accused were convicted and discharged, the magistrate saying they had already been in custody for two weeks, and he did not desire to inflict further punishment.
