DEFENCE OF FRANC

LAVAL GOVERNMENT PLENARY POWERS GIVEN BOTH HOUSES ASSENT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received June 9, 5.5 p.m.) PARTS. June 8 On the question of shelving all interpellations, the Chamber of Deputies carried a vote of confidence in the Laval Government by 412 votes to 137. This followed the promulgation of the Ministerial demand for exceptional powers for five months in order to combat speculation and defend the franc.

The Finance Committee adopted the Plenary Powers Bill by 19 votes to 14.

The measure was then submitted to the Chamber by M. Laval. It consisted of a single clause authorising the Government to take by decree until October 21 all measures necessary to fight speculation and defend the franc. Ibe bill was adopted by 324 votes to 160. Subsequently the Senate passed the bill bv 223 votes to 15.

M. Bouisson, whose Government of three days was defeated on the question of exceptional financial powers immediately after M. Elandin's Ministry had fallen for the same reason, was reelected president of the Chamber by 285 votes to 159.

M. LAVAL'S PROMISE

CONSULTING PARLIAMENT ANY SPECIAL MEASURES (Received June 9. 6.35 p.m.) PARIS, June 8 In addressing the Senate the Prime Minister, M. Laval, promised that before he introduced special measures he would consult the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies and their Finance Commissions, during the forthcoming vacation, although he would not necessarily accept their advice.

Parliament was then adjourned until June 18, when it will sit for a few days and again be adjourned until the autumn. In the meanwhile the Cabinet aims at removing the deficit.
