FIFTY YEARS AGO
NEED FOR SCHOOL OF MINES An agitation for the formation of a school of mines was in progress half a century ago. The Wellington correspondent of the New Zealand HkralD wrote in the issue of June 10, IS80: " It is the intention of the Hon. Mr, W. J. M. Larnaeh, Minister of Mines, to move that £I7OO be placed on the Estimates toward the establishment ot a school of mines. The Minister or Mines expressed the opinion some time ago that the prospects of the Auckland goldfields as likely to yield a large percentage of silver were particularly good. He stated yesterday that these prospects were likely to be tested very effectively by a now process to be applied to the material obtained from several mines. The Minister of Mines will make a formal statement to 1 arliament of the requirements and prospects of the mining industry ot tn colonv." The Thames School of Mines was founded later in the same year throng the enthusiasm of the Minister an . Professor Black, of the Otago Sc of Mines, then the only institution or its kind in the colony.
