GRAMMAR DEFEATS KING'S SUPERIOR PLAY BY BACKS The secondary schools 1 Rugby championship was commenced on Saturday when Auckland Grammar School defeated Ki n K * College at Middlemore. and Sacred Heart College beat Mount Albert Grammar School o:n the latter s ground. Fine play by the backs in the second half, resulting in 15 points being scored, enabled Auckland Grammar to defeat king s College by 38 points to G at Middlemore. While Grammar was the superior all-round team on the day. the margin of points was rather flattering Playing with a steady breeze. King's dominated play in the first half. but. could not reach the line. A penalty goal was kicked by Arehdall and Grammar replied with a try by Massey after good work by Jones and Thompson. The kick failed and the teams crossed over at 3~all. , .. Grammar Boon took the lead, a strong run by Coughlan sending Massey over. King's attacked strongly, but Knight relieved and from a penalty Passmore goaled. Kind's forwards battled through, but CoughInn received from a scrum and cut through King's defence, fending off three men to dive over at the comer. The Grammar bucks came more info the picture and Jones a:nd Coughlan made an opening for Douglas to score. A strong rallv by the King s forwards carried the ball to the Grammar ]jn<p and McGruther whipped a pass out to Wilson, who dived over. Orr failed from « d:ifl!k-ult angle. From mid field Coiighlan T&ade a spectacular run and sent Marriot over. The kick missed and the game ended with the score: Grammar, 18; Kings College, 6.
EVENLY-CONTESTED GAME SUCCESS OF SACRED HEART The match between Sacred Heart College and Mount Albert Grammar School, at Mount Albert, was fast and evenly contested with the Sacred Heart team a winner by 9 points to f.. Sacred Heart had a definite advantage in the scrums and lineout* and combined well, but it could penetrate the Mount Albert defence only once, when Kawe scored wide out. The Mount Albert backs were speedier, but saw less o, the ball and many of their opportunities for'combined movements wet I spoilt by injudicious kicking by the inside backs. However Mime attractive movements were executed two resulting in tries, the first when Martin ran forcefully for the corner, and the other when Fenton finished off a delightful attack combining both forwards and backs. Neither try was converted. Sillied Heart College's other points came from two fine penalty kicks by Hare, who guv# an excellent display of kicking.
