SMITHFIELD QUOTATIONS (Received June 9. 5.5 p.m.) LOXDOX, June 8 Following are the latest quotations for frozen and chilled meat, with those ot the previous week for comparison: FROZEX MUTTON June 1 June 8

The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield.

To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week, and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer.

RESEARCH STATION MR. FORBES' INSPECTION LONDON, June 7 At the invitation of the eminent scientist, Lord Rutherford, formerly of Nelson, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. G. W. Forbes, and Mrs. Forbes inspected the low temperature research station .at Cambridge and saw experiments being conducted with the object of retaining the bloom on chilled beef. LAMB MARKET QUIET LOW PRICES FOR BEEF The following cablegrams regarding the Smithfield market at the close of business Inst week have been received:— New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. —The lamb market is quiet, with little material change in prices. The demand has been rather affected by the low prices of beef. Trade in wethers and ewes is slow, with prices slightly easier. The New Zealand beef market is affected by the low prices of Argentine chilled beef. The porker market is dull, with a poor demand. The baconer market is quiet and unchanged.

Bank of New Zealand. —Wethers and ewes: Trade is slow. Lambs: The market is quiet and unchanged. Values are: Wethers, light, 3|d to 4Jd per lb.; heavy, 3d to 3Jd; ewes, 2id to 3jd; lambs, twos, 6Jd to 7d; eights, 6£d to 7d; fours, 6jd to 6Jd; seconds, 6Jd to 6Jd.

PRICES COMPARED NEW ZEALAND PARITY The equivalent New Zealand parity of the published Smithfield market prices, on the basis of a prime woolly lamb of 341b. weight, is as follows, according to figures of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board: N.Z. The cost of killing, freezing and placing on board steamer is based on a charge of .575 d per lb. Allowance is made for present skin values and includes exchange.
