OBITUARY

MR. GEORGE HITCHMAN [by telegraph—own correspondent] FEILDING, Sunday The death has occurred of Mr. George Hitehman, aged 96, one of the pioneers of the district, in which he had resided for over 60 years. With the late Mrs. Hitehman and their family of seven children, Mr. Hitchman came from England in the sailing ship Salisbury in 1574, landing at Wellington. The journey to Feilding was made by way of Foxton, the family travelling from there on the old tram to Palmerston North and then by bullock dray to their destination." After engaging in bush-felling and railway work, Mr. Hitehman took up land on Kimbolton Road, farming there until 13 years ago, when he left the management to his son. Mr. Hitehman is survived by the following; members of his family:—Messrs. Will Hitehman, of Torehunga, John Hitehman, of Dannevirke, George Hitehman, of Feilding, and Mesdames Adsett, of Dannevirke, Bowler, of Feilding, and Lissington, of Whangarei. MR. E. C. H. BARTLETT [from our own correspondent"! WHANGAREr. Saturday The death occurred at Ohaeawai this morning of Mr. Edward C. H. Bartlett, who had been in charge of the dairy machinery deportment of the North Auckland Farmers' Co-operative, Limited, Whangarei, since 1931. Mr. Bartlett, who was born in England, enlisted at the outbreak of the Great War, and was on active service for four years. He was badly gassed. After the war Mr. Bartlett made a study of dairy machinery and for several years he represented the Treloar Company in the Manawatu, and later in North Auckland. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and two step-daughters. THE REV. WILLIAM SAUNDERS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] ELTHAM, Sunday The death has occurred at the residence of his son, Dr. D. H. Saunders, of the Rev. William Saunders, a former chairman of the Now Zealand Congregational Union, aged 77. Born at Pembroke, Wales, in 1857, Mr. Saunders was educated at Hackney College, London. He began his ministry in 188-1 at the Bromley-by-Bow Congregational Church, East London. In 1890 he arrived in New Zealand with his bride, and settled at Dunedin, where he had charge of the Moray Place Church until his retirement in 1928.
